Esther, I am profoundly sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathy. Judging from the pictorial history, you and David had a long, happy and productive life. Uncle Ivan and Aunt Ethel would be proud. I have to say, both cousin Donald and myself predicted a great future for you, as we sat across the long dinner table in Uncle Toby's office-sitting room observing you. Clearly we were right. My mother, Carolyn, was a church secretary during Dave & Esther's ministry at Ephrata Mennonite Church, so I knew him as Pastor. He and his family were always generous and loving to my mother, sister, and I, of which I am thankful.
I very much enjoyed hearing the tributes and stories of Dave during his service. To me, he was one of the Great men of faith in my life, one who I admired and respected for his wisdom and grace. Though he had a commanding presence with his tall stance, his warmth of smile and friendly demeanor quickly endeared him to those he met. As I was a boy who had lost his father at a young age, Dave was an important male voice through my younger years, and I appreciate the strong christian model he provided.
On the lighter side, I remember spending time at their house with my sister, while my mother worked on the church bulletin. I remember the parakeet singing in the kitchen and I think there was a crazy clock that Alison and I enjoyed. I remember shelling lima beans on their deck and sneaking TV in one of the spare rooms to pass the time. One of my fondest memories is something silly - Dave enjoyed spicy foods and I remember the "hot" chips that he gave to us and told us to keep in the freezer. I loved those chips and often think of him when I enjoy spicy chips (sometimes from the freezer).
Dave will be missed by many people, a testament to how many lives he and Esther have touched over the years. I am thankful for his service for our Savior and am happy to know he is celebrating today.

We were unable to attend the memorial service live but recently had a chance to view the various videos included on this site.
We were impressed by the many ways that David (& Esther) invested in so many people over the years including family, church, and friends. What a blessing it was to hear the celebration of a life well-lived. We are challenged to live our lives the same way.
We offer our condolences to Esther and the family as they grieve the loss of husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. May God comfort all of you.

Thank you for inviting us to share in the Memorial Service of this Godly friend of mine (my husband only came to know him later in life). Words shared during the service were true--one who cared for others (outside the door and those inside!) deeply and invited them in friendship and fellowship (Esther, you did as well!). It was an honor and joy to serve in your home and to know both of you and some of your family while we worshipped together! Yes, we rejoice for his death he now so enjoys with His Savior and the saints gone on before! God's blessings of comfort and the enjoyment of memories of one of God's faithful servant to the end, from Allen and me, and Corey, Alison, as well! Someday we will join in the celebration chorus in heaven with him!

I watched the slideshow and the memorial service this week honoring Pastor Dave and I was touchingly reminded of the beautiful and gentle heart of this dear man and of how blessed I was to have known him for what now seems like a brief time. His family did a wonderful job reflecting the exemplary life he led and his dedication to our Lord. My prayers are with you Ms Esther as you continue on in faith, as I know you will, and for all his family as I know he will be greatly missed.

It's unique the connection I have with your loved one since I work for Fred at EMU, and my parents, Atlee and Dorothy Schlabach, attended Bahia Vista while he served as interim pastor. They had a deep appreciation for Dave. In fact, when my father had been admitted into the hospital for an illness that he recovered from, my dad wanted to be sure I met his pastor. This was a beautiful service and was inspiring to hear what kind of person he was. What a blessing for good fathers.

We were so blessed by the service yesterday that we listened to it again today and appreciated every part of the meaningful service. Dave's life was a testimony and the anticipation of his own death was a great testimony to his faith.
You have such a talented and creative family as evidenced by the singing, the poetry by Nathan and Andrea and the wonderful tributes given by your children which so beautifully described Dave's life and ministry.
May you experience God's help as you navigate life without your beloved husband. We see in you a deep strength and faith that we believe will help you in this journey.

I have many happy memories of Dave. While I didn’t attend Ashton, four of my siblings did, and loved him as their pastor. My brother Lester enjoyed fishing with him as well. In the last few years he and Esther were faithful attenders of the local MEDA chapter luncheons. Their attendance was always an encouragement. He lived a life of servanthood. We are better persons for his presence among us.

I first met Dave when he came by Pine Creek Chapel last year. I immediately sensed a person who loved the Lord and loved to make friends. David was my 'baby' brother...a wonderful brother. We are so thankful we spent a couple hours each day for two weeks several weeks before he went to be with God. It was a precious time, as David was totally clear in his mindful conversations, speaking about his looking forward to seeing Jesus. We talked about our growing up years in India, how when our parents put us in boarding school, one thousand miles from home, not seeing them for six months, how difficult it was when they left..not seeing them for six months. I remember like yesterday,when our parents left the year David was old enough to leave in boarding. How David and I went into a classroom to cry together. We drew pictures of our feelings on the chalk board.

What a wonderful service! We so wanted to be there in person to give our love and hugs to Esther, Sonya and the rest of the family. It was your Dave's tap on the shoulder to my Dave that got him into the ministry here in Gulfport, and as your pastor said in the memorial service, Dave Kniss became a friend and a mentor to us. Dave and Esther taught us about hospitality, compassion, honesty and humbleness, loving God, accepting everyone, enjoying life and food, and working together as a team. The memorial service was a beautiful and powerful celebration of life (and death). One of my favorite memories with Dave and Esther is hunkering down together for a hurricane at Sonya and Ellis's, and the opportunity he took to speak life and truth, blessing and encouragement to all of us there.

Phil, Millard and I met your parents at Bahia Vista in Sarasota a few years ago. That was my only contact. I greatly appreciated learning to know your dad in a deeper way--his compassion and welcoming all to walk with him. I was greatly impacted by the poem read by Pastor Steve which was so important to your Dad re the doorway--and staying close to the entrance to help others find the doorway vs going too deeply inward. Dave has a special place in my heart because he shared during a spiritual emphasis week at SCS when I was 13 and I gave my heart to the Lord. Over the years he was always friendly whenever our paths crossed. He was a good role model to many and I know he is missed.

Dave and Esther welcomed Jerry and me and our five children
in the 1980's when we'd drive from Ft. Myers to Arcadia to attend the church there. We loved being a part of the church and spending Sundays with them; our daughter, Chris, and their daughter, Sonya, were about the same age and became friends. Dave and Esther shared their home, their lives and the love of Christ with us and have been a part of our Christian walk for many years. To know them is to know Christ and to share the gospel and know the Hope Jesus gives us in this journey is a gift, further enforced by our time in Florda. Praise the Lord for what awaits all of us who name the name of Jesus!

We will never forget the time we spent with both of you in your home in February 2017 while in Florida for a pastor's conference. then again in February 6, 2019 Joe made a phone call to wish him a happy birthday. We talked together about the mission of God and the godly legacy that he has been leaving for many to follow. I thanked him for being a godly example for me. We prayed together that day and rejoiced in the bond that we shared together as disciples of Jesus.

We remember how Dave enjoyed sitting inside our deck door and watching birds come to feeders and bird bath and was able to identify so many birds. Dave was a blessing to our family. Love and peace to you, Esther, our sister, and to your family.

I have appreciated related to David as a man called by Christ for mission. I have cherished the sense of call in David's soul and that has been an encouragement to me. He enjoyed following Jesus. We are remembering the trip down south together. We enjoyed David and Esther introducing us to some of the churches in Florida. It was a marvelous journey.

My heart rotates between celebration and grief. Celebration of a full life so well lived in love of his Lord and his love for others. Grief because it seems Uncle Dave was one of those people I always deeply loved and looked up to. As I grew to his height I stilled looked up to him. Uncle Dave and Aunt Esther's family and ours were very close growing up, cousins close in age. Hosting our family today as we remember Uncle Dave. I love you and say with joy, "See You in the Morning"

As long-time friends and co-pastors in FL churches, (with Ken & Miriam) in earlier years, I have many good memories and know the tremendous value of Dave to people in churches at Ashton & Pine Creek Chapel. And more recently in Bahia Vista, as Galen and I now were blessed to be in small group with Dave and Esther. God bless you as a family with comfort, peace, and a tremendous knowing that your husband/father was a servant of God so faithful.

It was always great to see the happy faces of Esther and Dave in our Sunday School Class. Dave did not speak much, but when he did, his experience of biblical study and commitment to Christ Jesus was always evident. Thank God for the life and times of David Kniss
